Do Fuel Additives Work?

Do Fuel Additives Work?

Store shelves are littered with fuel additives that claim to provide a number of benefits, including...

• Increased fuel economyAMSOIL Pi, fuel additives
• Smoother engine operation
• Reduced emissions
• Extended engine life
• Maximum horsepower

Do they work? A quick Google search reveals multiple articles that claim they don’t. There must be a good reason so many people regard fuel additives with skepticism.

One reason is, while most motorists expect to experience the benefits promised by fuel additives immediately, it takes several tanks of treated fuel before most additives provide any noticeable performance improvement. That doesn’t bode well in a society used to getting what it wants, when it wants it.

Engine condition plays a vital role in additive performance

Here’s what often happens. Over time, performance-robbing deposits form on your engine’s fuel injectors, valves and in the combustion chamber. Today’s injectors are highly engineered to tight tolerances, and even minute deposits interfere with the spray pattern and reduce power and fuel economy. The problem is especially pronounced in newer high-pressure common-rail (HPCR) diesel engines and in direct-injection engines that locate the injectors in the combustion chamber, exposed to intense heat. Eventually, you notice a reduction in power, throttle response, fuel economy or drivability. You pick up a fuel additive at the gas station or parts store. “Increases Fuel Economy!” it proclaims. “Outstanding,” you think.

Additive concentration matters

But, by the time you pull up your driveway, nothing has changed. Or again the next day after you arrive at work. What went wrong?

Technically, nothing. You likely bought an inexpensive additive that contains minimal cleaning agents. If you continue to buy the additive and use it with every tank of fuel, maybe over some period of time – could be weeks to months – you’ll experience a slight up-tick in power, fuel economy or drivability.AMSOIL Pi cleans valves Then you can continue to use the additive to maintain engine performance. The additive did, indeed, work and it did live up to its performance claims. It just didn’t do it quickly or dramatically enough.

It takes a fuel additive formulated to the correct concentration to deliver immediate results. And the fact is, most additives on the market simply don’t contain a sufficient concentration of cleaning agents to provide immediate results.

That’s where AMSOIL is different. P.i. Performance Improver, for example, is one of the most potent gasoline additives on the market today. It does an excellent job cleaning deposits to improve fuel economy up to 5.7% and an average of 2.3%. It also reduces emissions. Our technical study provides all the details you could ever want, and probably a few more. Or, simply take a look at the before/after images shown here and you can see the dramatic results after just one tank of fuel treated with P.i.

Don’t forget the diesel additives
Just like our gasoline additives, we apply the same philosophy to the diesel market. For peak performance, diesel engines need a daily dose of detergent for cleaning and lubricity to protect the injectors and fuel pump while keeping the combustion chamber clean. As a performance concentrate, AMSOIL Diesel Injector Clean provides the optimum chemistry to deliver confidence your truck is protected. AMSOIL Diesel Cold Flow and Diesel Cetane Boost, which are also performance concentrates, round out the AMSOIL diesel additive line and are excellent for all types of diesel applications.

And don’t forget Quickshot for your small engines and powersports equipment. It cleans performance-robbing deposits, stabilizes fuel during short-term storage and fights ethanol problems.

So, yes, fuel additives do work – if you use the right ones.

Midwest Ride-in at ERX Motorpark

We had a great time over the weekend checking out the Midwest Ride-in @erxmotorpark in Elk River, Mn. The Midwest Ride-in is a vintage snowmobile show like no other snowmobile show. Participants ride to the show, trailer to the show, and ride all around during the event. And it's not limited to just vintage sleds. ERX Motorpark has a vast trail system that all the snowmobiles were able to check out and enjoy. One of our AMSOIL Dealers, @_aplusoils was at the show all three days representing AMSOIL, selling products to participants and meeting some really cool folks. (We'll share more about that) This was a great fun FAMILY event. Our daughter, son-in-law, and grandkids all had a great time. Our grandson even got to drive his Kitty Cat snowmobile. #familytime #snowmobile #vintagesnowmobile #selfemployed #husbandandwife #husbandandwifeteam #supportsmallbusiness #selfemployedlife #amsoildealerstyle #beyourownboss #amsoilambassador #amsoil #enthusiast Follow u...

Palo Duro Jeep Jamboree

April 30, 2024 written by Linda Ford We just returned from an epic trip to Amarillo, Texas to attend the Palo Duro Jeep Jamboree.  This event was our 8th Jamboree.  What is a Jeep Jamboree?  Good question!  It's an off-roading event specifically for Jeeps.  Other makes and models are not allowed to attend, you must have a Jeep.  Where are the Jeep Jamborees?  All over the world!  Jeep Jamboree just added events in Iceland, Swiss Alps and Portugal this year.  There are several events throughout the United States.  The eight that we have attended have been in seven different states.  Here is the list of the places we have been with the Jeep Jamboree: Drummond Island, Michigan (twice)    Ozark, Arkansas Lewisburg, West Virginia Seymour, Missouri Deadwood, South Dakota Mole Lake, Wisconsin Amarillo, Texas These events have all sorts of different trails, difficulties and great comradery amongst the fellow trail riders....

Prepping for Texas

April 8, 2024 Written by Mike and Linda Ford  Our next big adventure is a trip to the Palo Duro Jeep Jamboree at Figure 3 Ranch near Amarillo, Texas.   This will be the 9th Jamboree that we have attended and our first time in Texas. Saharacon, our 7-year-old Jeep Wrangler JKU, needed some maintenance this year before she's ready for the trails.  She had a bent rear control arm, all four doors were seized on, the control arm bushings were worn, and she had a leaking front axle.   We also installed a new Stinger infotainment system with cameras on the front and back of the Jeep.  We can't wait to see how it performs on the trail. Working on the doors - AMSOIL MP Metal Protector came through and all the doors were able to be removed, lubed up and put back into place for the season.  We usually leave the doors on all the time, but it doesn't hurt to make sure all the areas are free moving. Next up to get ready is the Ram 3500 Dually and the Lanc...
